Our Core Questions

How much is enough?

As a family office, we have always embraced a needs-based approach in managing our capital rather than chasing maximum returns. We set aside assets deemed “enough” for purpose and commit the rest of the capital for philanthropy, to address critical issues that the world is facing today. We do so because we recognise our planet’s ecological limits, the urgency of the meta-crisis we are in and the need to shift our mindset from endless growth and accumulation to respecting limits.

How Do We Respect Nature?

Humanity is part of Nature, and we are fully dependent on the natural world for our individual and collective wellbeing. We have incorporated a strong climate lens across our portfolio since 2014, and we are now incorporating a nature lens as well whereby, from philanthropy to public and private investments, we seek to integrate nature considerations in our capital deployment, management, and engagement activities.

How Should We Embrace Inclusivity?

We are conscious of the power we hold as an investor or funder. We also want to avoid our capital inadvertently creating unintended consequences for the communities we hope to serve. As we believe local communities are best placed to understand their own needs and opportunities, we work with trusted partners who are close to the ground, supporting organisations and projects that respond to local priorities and are informed by lived experiences of those communities.

What New Economic Models Are There?

At the core of the meta-crisis is our current economic system, whose logic of profit maximisation and endless growth is driving the depletion of essential natural resources and undermining human well-being. We believe there is a need for new business models that are just and regenerative, allowing nature to flourish while enriching human life. Through our catalytic capital initiative, Kulawan, we aim to demonstrate alternative business models that engage and benefit local communities and protect the natural environment to build long term resilience and sustainability.
